Over the Moon brings pretend play to Scarsdale

Thirteen years ago Jackie Freimor, founder of Over The Moon Music and More in Scarsdale, had a dream to set up a play space she could take her daughter to. She didn’t want a gym or indoor playground but instead a place where her daughter could dress up and pretend.

Her daughter is now a teenager but Jackie has brought that dream to life. Jackie, along with her co-director Nicole Zinn, who run the successful Over the Moon Music and More, for children in Scarsdale, have now expanded their storefront by an impressive 3,000 square feet. In this unique play space, children can engage in pretend play in the kitchen, the market, and other spots in a "neighborhood" created just for them.

Conveniently located on Garth Road in Scarsdale the play space has a $10 drop in charge for the whole family, allowing you to entertain your children for the whole day, as you can come and go…perfect if you need to run home for nap time or lunch.  With no membership charge and open 6 days a week, increasing to 7 days in the Fall, this play space will be a life saver for parents who need to get out of the house as the days get cooler.

The play space has been designed for children from birth through kindergarten age, but all children who visit with family are welcomed. On entry there is a natural flow to the space as a pathway leads the way through the ‘neighborhood’. You are greeted by the smiling faces of Jackie, Nicole and their staff and children can look and play with numerous Melissa & Doug puzzles, trucks and books, while you park the stroller. Vintage toys are displayed on top of this bookshelf but just out of reach of curious little hands, drawing on the nostalgia of our own childhoods.

As you travel through this idyllic neighborhood, you pass the post box with letters to be posted to Grandparents, Santa Claus and other friends. Here your children can pick out their ‘outfit’ with a selection ranging from fairies to astronauts; doctors to magicians. Little artists can draw on the chalkboards just opposite, as well as play with the magnetic boards as magnetic animals can come to life in their eyes.

A cleverly designed support wall has been turned into a tree with animals nesting and even the roof is a canopy of leaves. From here you can go to the infant area, a dedicated area appealing to babies, which includes a wall covered by a large mirror where they can gurgle at themselves while playing with sensory toys, soft books and get tummy time on an activity mat.

Nearby is a fully equipped kitchen where children can cook fabric food bought from the grocery store or do the laundry and ironing. It’s also tea party delight as teacups, teapots and a beautiful tray of fabric donuts are displayed.  A dolls house is nearby complete with swimming pool, furniture and little dolls to play house with.

For the veterinarians and firemen, there’s also a vet station where you can look after furry cats, dogs and bunnies and examine their x-rays or put on a fireman’s helmet and grab the oxygen tanks and loud speakers.

To truly describe how special this place is deserves a visit or three. It’s a pretend play heaven and a real game changer for play spaces in Westchester. This is one place that will be treasured by our children for years to come.
